Schools run on Chromebooks. In the US alone, Chromebooks make up over 50% of devices purchased for K-12 education. These devices are managed by school IT departments, which means students and teachers cannot install software without administrator approval.
This creates a real problem for video calling. Most video call apps require either a desktop download or a mobile app. On a managed Chromebook, neither is an option without IT involvement. Browser-based video calls solve this because there is nothing to install. The browser is the tool.
Why Chromebooks Need Browser-Based Tools
ChromeOS is a browser-first operating system. Its strength is simplicity and security. Its limitation is that it does not run traditional desktop applications. For video calls on Chromebook, browser-based is not an alternative. It is the default.

- No storage concerns. School Chromebooks typically have 16 to 32 GB of storage, much of which is already used. No app means no storage consumed
Use Cases in Education
Virtual office hours. A teacher posts a link on the class website or LMS. Students click it when they need help. No scheduling needed, no app for students to install.
Guest speakers. Inviting an outside expert to speak to a class. Send them a link. They join from whatever device they have. No need to add them to the school's Google Workspace or Teams instance.
Student group projects. Students in different locations working together can generate a link and collaborate over video. Screen sharing lets them work on documents together in real time.

For Teachers: Getting Started
- Go to InstantVideoCall and click "Start Call"
- A unique room link is generated
- Share the link with your students through your LMS (Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology) or email it directly
- Students click the link in Chrome on their Chromebooks and join the call
Screen sharing works for showing presentations, documents, or browser-based activities. Students can also share their screens to present work. For one-on-one tutoring sessions, the same approach works with a single student.
Privacy Considerations for Minors
When students are involved, privacy matters. InstantVideoCall does not collect personal information. No accounts mean no student data is stored. No recordings mean no video of minors is captured. The call exists only while it is happening.
That said, school districts should verify that any tool meets their acceptable use policies. While browser-based video calls do not install software or collect data, district policies vary and should always be checked.
